Plasma arc welding (PAW)

Plasma arc welding (PAW) is a welding process where heat is produced by an electrical arc formed between an electrode and the base material. The procedure is very similar to the TIG procedure, but the electrode is positioned inside the torch body and the plasma arc can be separated from the shield gas coating. Plasma gas is obtained by heating and ionising a gas emitted from a torch nozzle hole. It is designed for automated systems and is an attractive alternative to laser welding.

The process can be electrically powered by direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC).
